COMMON QUESTIONS (GENERAL)

ABOUT REIKI THERAPY

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a form of energy healing that originated from Japan.  'Rei' means universal and 'Ki' means Energy.

The core principles of Reiki Therapy is that it is:

  1. A practice of transmitting healing energy through the hands

  2. Passed on from Teacher to student through the attunement process

  3. Not guided by the Reiki Practitioner, but guided by your own innate wisdom to guide the Reiki where it is most needed.

  4. Reiki energy is not based on religious belief, faith or suggestion

Read more about what Reiki is.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF REIKI?

Reiki was first discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in 1922 in Tokyo Japan.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata brought the original Reiki teachings of Dr. Usui from Japan to the West in 1937 and continued to practice and teach until her passing in 1980.  Because of her devotion, Reiki has been passed on to millions of people all over the world, and the numbers continue to grow.  If it wasn’t for her, Reiki most likely would never have been discovered by the West and available to you today.

Read the extraordinary story of The History of Reiki and how Mrs. Takata secured the survival of Reiki.

HOW DOES REIKI WORK?

The Reiki Practitioner is 'attuned' to the Reiki, allowing them to access  Reiki much like an antenna on a radio tuning into the correct channel.

The Reiki Practitioner acts as a conduit between the Reiki and yourself, 'plugging you in' to the Reiki using a series of hand positions (mainly on the torso and head) which are the main energy centres of your body.

Your energy body innately knows where the Reiki is needed and via the Reiki Practitioner, draws the Reiki for as long as it is needed. Read more about How Reiki Works.

IS REIKI A RELIGION ?

No, Reiki is not a religion nor does it require any spiritual belief system whatsoever.

WHAT TYPES OF REIKI THERAPIES CAN I HAVE?

There are two ways you can receive Reiki:

  1. In-person Reiki Therapy ('Hands-On Reiki') where you attend the Reiki Session in person or

  2. Absent Reiki ('Distance Reiki') where you do not need to attend your session in person, and can be anywhere in the world whilst receiving Reiki.

Scroll down to read the Commonly Asked Questions sections specifically dedicated to each of those Reiki Therapies.

Otherwise, head to the pages of this website which go into detail about Hands-On Reiki Therapy and Distance Reiki Therapy respectively.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOES A REIKI PRACTITIONER HAVE?

A person may call themselves a Reiki Practitioner without having any formal qualifications or having undertaken  questionable training.

It is recommended that you engage a Reiki Practitioner that has:

  1. Completed an 'in-person' training course (as opposed to online),

  2. Holds a certificate in Reiki and has completed the Second Degree (Reiki II) Practitioner level training,

  3. Has trained and practices the original, unmodified system of Reiki, namely, Usui Ryoho Reiki.

Read more on 'Qualifications of a Reiki Practitioner.'

SHOULD I SEEK A REIKI MASTER TO FACILITATE REIKI FOR ME?

Both a Reiki II Practitioner and a Reiki Master have the same capacity to channel Reiki for clients as they have received the same level of attunement and training needed to practice Reiki professionally.

Level II Reiki training which earns the Practitioner the title of Reiki Master focusses soley on preparing and 'attuning' the Reiki II Practitioner to teach Reiki to others and to pass Reiki down to students via the attunement process.

When seeking a Reiki Practitioner, it is recommended that you seek a Second Degree Reiki Practitioner (Reiki II) or a Level III Master as both have the same capacity to access Reiki and faciltate Reiki for others.  Learn more about the 'Levels of Reiki Training'.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO KNOW A REIKI PRACTITIONER'S LINEAGE?

It is important to know your Reiki Therapist's Lineage, as this is a way that you can verify and ensure that they are qualified and practicing authentic Reiki Therapy.

Reiki is passed on in person from Teacher to student in a process called 'attunement' over and over. An authentic Reiki Practitioner will have a succession of Teachers leading directly back to the founder of the system of Reiki one is practicing (this is called 'Lineage').

Usui Reiki Ryoho is the original, most authentic, unmodified system of Reiki founded by Father of Reiki, Dr. Mikao Usui.  It is recommended that you seek a Reiki Practitioner whose lineage traces directly back to Dr. Mikao Usui.  Read more about 'The Training of you Reiki Practitioner'.

More about 'Reiki Lineage'.

HOW DO I KNOW THE REIKI PRACTITIONER IS PRACTICING AUTHENTIC REIKI?

These days there are some practitioners practice modified systmes of Reiki, use crystals and incorporate other forms of energy healing and call it Reiki.

In order to ensure that you are receiving authentic Reiki Therapy, it is recommended that you find a Reiki Therapist that has a Certificate of training in (and practices) Traditional Usui Ryoho Reiki.  This is the truest form of Reiki that has not been modified or adapted since its discovery by Reiki Founder Dr. Mikao Usui.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR IN A PROSPECTIVE REIKI PRACTITIONER

When trying to find a suitable Reiki Practitioner for you, it is recommended that they answer 'yes' to these questions:

  1. Have you attended 'in-person' Reiki Training  (as opposed to online)?

  2. Do you have a Certificate of Training in Level II or Level III Reiki?

  3. Have you trained in and do you practice Traditional Usui Ryoho Reiki?

  4. Can I see and does you Reiki Lineage trace back to Reiki Founder, Dr. Usui?

  5. Do you practice Reiki daily on yourself?

  6. Do you use a 'hands-on' technique for the Reiki hand positions (as opposed to hovering)?

  7. Do you practice flexible timing of the hands positions until I have drawn all the Reiki I need in each position (as opposed to timing the positions)?

  8. For distance Reiki, do you write intuitive notes and will you provide me with those notes?

For more detail on the reasoning behind those questions, read 'Tips For Finding A Reiki Practitioner'.

COMMON QUESTIONS (HANDS-ON REIKI THERAPY)

WHAT IS HANDS-ON REIKI

Hands-On Reiki is where you attend you reiki session in person and where your Reiki Practitioner connects you to the Reiki by placing their hands directly on your body in a series of prescribed hand positions.

Read more about 'Hands-On Reiki'.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST REIKI TREATMENT?

If you want to make the most of your Reiki Therapy session, it is recommended that prior to your session you try have an early night's rest and avoid consuming alcohol or drugs (other than in the ordinary course or physician prescribed medication).

The reason for this is that Reiki works on what it deems to be a priority and if you are suffering from temporary fatigue due to a late night or the after-affects of alcohol or drugs, that may be what the Reiki focusses on, rather than moving into more long-term, deeper healing.

Having said that, Reiki Therapy is your Gift to yourself, so it is entirely your choice what you choose to do prior to any session.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISTANCE REIKI AND HANDS-ON REIKI THERAPY

Whether you have Hands-On Reiki Therapy or Distance Reiki Therapy, the Reiki you receive is the same.

The only real differences between Hands-On Reiki and Distance Reiki is that for Distance Reiki you do not attend in person and you receive intuitive notes which the Reiki Practitioner takes to ground the healing and which detail, from the Practitioner's mind's eye, what your healing relates to.

However, some clients prefer one more than the other for various reasons.  Read more on the Benefits of Hands-On Reiki Therapy and the Benefits of  Distance Reiki Therapy.

WHAT TO I WEAR FOR MY REIKI SESSION?

It is recommended that you wear loose, comfortable clothing that is appropriately cool or warm for the weather (keeping in mind that your temperature tends to drop when lying down in a relaxed state)

Metals can interfere with the flow of the Energy so it is recommended that you do not wear jewellery or a watch to your session or that you take them off before commencing your session.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT FROM MY FIRST REIKI SESSION?

In a standard treatment, Reiki is drawn by you (using the Reiki Pracititioner a conduit between you and the Reiki).

The Reiki Practitioner's hands are placed on various set positions on your body (mainly on the head and torso) to essentially plug you in to the Reiki.

You will usually lie on a massage table but treatments can also be given while you are seated or even standing if for any reason, you are not able to lie on the table.

You will remain fully clothed for the Reiki session and a light blanket may be placed over you to keep you at a comfortable temperature.

Read more about what you can expect with 'Hands-On Reiki Therapy'.

DO I NEED TO TAKE MY CLOTHES OFF FOR MY REIKI SESSION?

No, you remain fully clothed at all times for a Reiki Therapy session.

WHY DO SOME REIKI PRACTITIONERS HOVER THEIR HANDS IN A REIKI THERAPY SESSION?

'Hovering' over the Reiki positions (as opposed to the Practitioner placing their hands directly on the recipient's body)  is a modification and adaptation of original Reiki Therapy Practice as taught by Reiki Founder and Father Dr. Usui.  It is believed that this has happened as a result of modern sensibilities.

Hands-On Reiki is recommended as it allows direct connection between the recipient and the Reiki.  Read more about why hands-on Reiki is best practice.

WHY DO SOME REIKI PRACTITIONERS TIME THE REIKI HAND POSITIONS?

Timing of hand positions is a recent modification and adaptation of the original practice of Reiki Therapy. It is not recommended for optimum results from Reiki Therapy.

You energy body innately knows how much Reiki you need for each position and this will change with every session.  What you need compared to what another person needs will be very different as we all have own own individual and unique physical, mental, psychological and spiritual needs.  It is not for the Reiki Practitioner to get involved in that process and potentially 'cut-off' the Reiki before you have drawn all you need from it.

Learn more about 'how Reiki works' and why 'flexible timing of the Reiki hand positions' is recommended.

IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO DO AFTER MY REIKI THERAPY SESSION?

Reiki promotes energy shifts and detoxification and accordingly, it is important to be gentle with yourself after your Reiki Therapy session and in the days that follow.  It is important to keep your elecrolyte levels up, stay well hydrated and help flush your system.

It is recommended that after your Reiki Therapy session, you drink lots of water, add good quality salt to your meals (such as Himalayan Pink salt or Celtic salt), have a warm bath or shower before bed and try to have a quiet and early night.

COMMON QUESTIONS (DISTANCE REIKI THERAPY)

WHAT IS DISTANCE REIKI?

For Distance Reiki, you do not need to attend the session in person, you can be anywhere in the world.

Distance Reiki works on the basis of the Hermetic Law of Similarity which holds that we are all connected (as we are all made of energy) and part of larger whole.  Distance Reiki allows a Reiki Practitioner to connect to the energy filed of the recipient and facilitate Reiki over distance and time.

The Reiki Practitioner uses the same hand positions as Hands-On Reiki Therapy using a proxy for your body and writes intuitive notes about what the healing relates to in order to ground the healing.

I invite you to read more about How Distance Reiki Works and the Benefits of Distance Reiki.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DISTANCE REIKI AND HANDS-ON REIKI THERAPY

Whether you have Hands-On Reiki Therapy or Distance Reiki Therapy, the Reiki you receive is the same.

Having said that, Reiki Therapy is your Gift to yourself, so it is entirely your choice what you choose to do prior to any session.

DO I NEED TO DO ANYTHING DURING MY DISTANCE REIKI SESSION?
